The Strongest value for shock win over Penarol in Copa Libertadores clash
Visitors have what it takes to overturn red-hot favourites
Copa Libertadores
Thursday 11.15pm
Bolivian outfit The Strongest are no longer able to qualify for the knockout stage of the Copa Libertadores but they can leapfrog Penarol in Group C to make the second stage of the Copa Sudamericana with victory away to the Uruguayan side.
The Strongest have failed to live up to their name in South America’s elite club competition this year but showed glimpses of quality in their recent clash with Libertad, holding the group leaders to a 1-1 draw until the 86th minute before conceding two late goals.
The visitors will look to build on their experience of the competition last year, when they made the last 16 only to be dispatched by finalists Lanus, and they could edge a Penarol side on a slight decline.
Penarol can still make the next stage of the Copa Libertadores if they beat The Strongest and Atletico Tucuman lose to Libertad.
However, they have lost two of their last three matches, including a defeat in their first match of the second domestic tournament of the year, the Torneo Intermedio.
The Strongest have conceded more goals (11) than any other side in the Copa Libertadores this term but will be buoyed by the fact that they beat Penarol 1-0 on matchday one, courtesy of an Edison Carcelen strike.
The Bolivians have demonstrated goalscoring prowess in other competitions in 2018, not least their domestic Torneo Apertura, where they have made it to the semi-finals, and they could pull off one of the shocks of the tournament.
Recommendation
The Strongest
