One way to think about those questions is by considering others: What are the general characteristics of champions, and by how much, if at all, did this season's main contenders fall short last season?

In 38-game Premier League seasons champions have averaged 86 points. How many points they gained, naturally, depended on the number of games they won, drew and lost, which in turn was heavily influenced by how many goals they scored and conceded. The average goal difference of champions was 48.
