Suffering St Pauli fans could get some respite

Hipsters all over Europe have been crying into their beards and mulling the demise of St Pauli in their overpriced coffee houses as the team of free love and trendy fans come to terms with the fact that relegation from Bundesliga 2 is a real possibility this season.

From a footballing point of view, Hamburg is in the doldrums.

Former European champions HSV are propping up the Bundesliga standings and city neighbours St Pauli, fourth last season, are also rock-bottom, in the second tier.

However, despite off-field issues there were shoots of recovery in last week’s 1-1 draw with Nuremberg which snapped a five-match losing sequence and St Pauli look overpriced to take something from one of this season’s surprise package, Wurzburger Kickers.

The Bavarians came up from division three via a playoff and have one of the lowest-valued squads in the division so it is a shock to see them hanging around the middle of the table.

Is that success sustainable under boss Bernd Hollerbach, who started his career as a player at St Pauli before moving on to Kaiserslautern and Hamburg?

Possibly not is the most likely answer to that conundrum.

The Kickers have collected only one draw from their last three matches and this represents a fair chance for St Pauli to claim a positive result even though it seems unlikely former Arsenal midfielder Ryo Miyaichi will recover from a head injury in time to feature.
