St Mary's stalemate does little to help Hughes or Mourinho

Two teams under serious pressure met at St Mary's but there was nothing cagey about Southampton's 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

All the goals came in the first half with the 7-2 Saints racing into a 2-0 lead and trading at 2-7 in-play before United hit back with goals from Romelu Lukaku and Ander Herrera.

Southampton boss Mark Hughes had been 1-7 to be the next Premier League manager to leave his job before kick-off against United and the result may not be enough to save him from the sack.

The 2-2 scoreline, a 14-1 chance before kick-off, does little to enhance the Red Devils' top-four credentials, leaving Jose Mourinho's side seventh in the table.

Cardiff's victory over Wolves on Friday ramped up the pressure on some of the other relegation candidates and Burnley look in serious trouble after a comprehensive 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.

Newcastle's winning run came to an end with a 3-0 home defeat to West Ham and there was also a setback for resurgent Huddersfield.

The Terriers took the lead in the first minute of their home game against Brighton but striker Steve Mounie was sent off before half-time and the Seagulls hit back to win 2-1.

Leaders Manchester City beat Bournemouth 3-1 with goals from Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling and Ilkay Gundogan and the Citizens are 1-4 to retain the Premier League title.

Leicester moved above Watford in the table thanks to a 2-0 win over the Hornets with Jamie Vardy and James Maddison on the scoresheet.

Leeds and Norwich, the top two in the Sky Bet Championship, kept up the pace in the race for promotion to the Premier League.

Leeds, 11-5 shots, capitalised on a goalkeeping error to claim a 1-0 win away to promotion rivals Sheffield United while Norwich, the shortest-priced favourites on the Championship coupon, had to come from a goal down to beat Rotherham 3-1.
