England U21’s got their European Championship qualifying campaign off to a perfect start with a 2-0 win at home to Kosovo in September and Lee Carsley’s Young Lions should have few concerns following up in Slovenia.
Carsley retained only two of the starting 11 who had played in England's final game at Euro 2021 under former boss Aidy Boothroyd in the Kosovo success, and that was evident in what was far from a polished performance.
However, the result was the most important aspect and this is a group of players, featuring Tottenham’s Oliver Skipp, Crystal Palace loanee Conor Gallagher and Arsenal ace Emile Smith-Rowe, that should only improve with time together.
And this represents a good opportunity to gel further with Slovenia finding wins hard to come by.
The hosts ended a nine-game winless run stretching back to 2019 with September’s scrappy 1-0 success against ten-man Andorra, who had previously lost 2-0 to England’s victims Kosovo.
With Liverpool’s Curtis Jones, former Manchester United man Angel Gomes and Cole Palmer of Manchester City also involved, Carsley has assembled a strong squad that should prove at least two goals too good for the Slovenians.
