Match preview

In theory, Slovakia versus Scotland is a key match with ramifications at either end of the Nations League Group B2 table.

In reality, this is a match between two countries who are riding the absolute crest of a wave after dramatically booking their places at next summer's European Championship finals on Thursday, and while all of these players will have passed Covid-19 tests before kick-off they might be glad they didn't also have to take breath tests on Friday morning.

The Hangover Derby takes place in Trnava with Slovakia needing to win to have any chance of staying in the second tier. Scotland would probably take a point, though victory would guarantee promotion to the big league.

The Scots are certainly in the better form of the two countries after making it nine games unbeaten with their super shootout success against the Serbs.

Slovakia, however, have played only one match under new boss Stefan Tarkovic - Thursday's extra-time win against Northern Ireland.

For clues as to a possible bet look back to last month's meeting between these sides at Hampden Park. That, too, was a few days after a Euro 2020 playoff contest – Scotland had just pipped Israel in their semi-final and Slovakia had inched past Ireland in theirs – and that game was an absolute shocker.

Neither side seemed particularly bothered and the Scots pinched it 1-0 thanks to a strike from QPR forward Lyndon Dykes.

Backing under 1.5 goals looks a value bet - it would have paid out in three of Scotland's last four games.

Key stat

Three of Scotland's last four internationals have produced under two goals.
