Team news

Charlton

Preston
Ben Davies hopes to have overcome a knock. Skipper Tom Clarke, Lewis Mount and Josh Harrop are sidelined.

Match preview

Preston fans who have chosen to swerve this trip to south London because of the midday start might have done themselves a favour.

The Lilywhites will go top if they can win at Charlton but the value looks to be the Addicks to see off their highflying visitors.

Lee Bowyer’s men are still being priced up like a relegation team yet they are a long way from struggling and, with more and more players returning to full health, they shouldn’t have any concerns at all about going down.

They have won only two of their last eight matches – at home to Leeds and Derby – but in among that sequence are creditable draws at Fulham and, last Saturday, West Brom.

This is a team who can hold their own with the very best, look solid defensively, and will improve again when striker Lyle Taylor returns to lead the line.

Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher is only 19 but he is leading by example and Charlton are full of confidence.

North End, of course, are going great guns and top spot beckons for Alex Neil's men.

They are the division’s top scorers with 27 and have a couple of unheralded superstars in Daniel Johnson and Tom Barkhuizen who will test out any defence.

However, Neil’s side have won just one of their six away matches – a 1-0 triumph at Birmingham – and that travel sickness means Charlton make plenty of appeal at the prices.

Preston’s matches average over three goals per game, Charlton’s a shade over 2.6, so punters can expect an entertaining encounter.

Key stat

Charlton have not trailed at half-time in any of their last 11 competitive home games.
