Chinese Super League
1pm Friday

Shanghai SIPG and Guangzhou Evergrande are in hot pursuit of Chinese Super League leaders Beijing Guoan and they get their chance to showcase their title credentials when they square up on China’s central coast on Friday.

The pair, separated by just three points, are in equally good nick. Champions Shanghai are second and enjoying a six-game winning streak, which includes inflicting a first league defeat of the season on pace-setting Guoan, while visitors Evergrande have won their last five games, scoring five goals in each of their last two successes.

Something has to give at the Shanghai Stadium and home advantage could prove the decisive factor.

SIPG’s maiden CSL success put an end to Evergrande’s dominance after they had claimed seven straight titles and it was largely down to their formidable home form.

Vitor Pereira’s men won 13 of their 15 league games on home soil last season and they have started this campaign by winning five of their opening six showdowns on their own patch.

The 2-1 win over Guoan, who had conceded only three times in racking up ten straight successes prior to that, was the highlight and a reproduction of that performance should be good enough.

Despite their positive start, Evergrande have conceded two or more goals in three of their five away ventures and they will need to tighten things up defensively with SIPG’s Brazilian trio on the loose.

Elkeson, Hulk and former Chelsea star Oscar have built up an excellent partnership in Shanghai and they have combined to score 13 of their 24 league goals.

SIPG average two goals per game at home and they may prove too explosive for their guests.
