Weekend preview

It hasn’t been difficult to find fault in the performances of Rangers and manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst hasn’t been immune to criticism in recent weeks. A draw at Hibs and a 4-0 hammering at Celtic put a huge dent in the Gers’ chances of winning back the Scottish Premiership title. However, St Mirren’s shock victory over the Bhoys, has let the Govan side back in the race.

The Light Blues go to Hearts on Saturday, and although it’s not a certainty that Rangers will walk away with three points, they certainly look to have a better chance than the prices suggest.

The Gers faced Hearts five times last season and the Jambos picked up just a single draw from those contests. That was in a campaign that saw Robbie Neilson’s men finish third-best in the SPL and it’s fair to say that Hearts are a little way off the level they were operating at last season.

The Edinburgh outfit were 3-0 winners at Motherwell last time out but the expected-goal numbers show that to be an unjust scoreline and it was only the third win that Hearts have recorded in their last nine all competition matches. Rangers are 7-10 shots to win at Tynecastle and they look a cracking bet.

Aberdeen can get back to winning ways when they host Kilmarnock. The Dons were beaten at Hibs last time out and prior to that they conceded a late leveller at Ross County. However, Jim Goodwin’s men hammered Livingston 5-0 in their latest contest at Pittodrie and it’s been a fairly positive beginning to the campaign for the Granite City side.

The Dons have scored 16 goals in five home matches in all competitions this season and that firepower is likely to be too much for a Killie outfit who have failed to score in losing all four of their away league matches this term.
