Weekend preview

Aberdeen were set a tough task at Parkhead in their Scottish Premiership opener last weekend, but they look capable of picking up their first league win of the season at home to St Mirren. Jim Goodwin faces his old side on Saturday and the Dons appear to be on the up under the former Buddies boss.

Clearly, it’s going to take a truly woeful effort to fall below last season’s tenth-place finish, but on the evidence of the early stages of the League Cup and Aberdeen’s performance in their opening-day defeat against Celtic, better can be expected this term.

The Dons won all four of their League Cup group-stage matches, scoring 12 goals and not conceding once, and Goodwin’s new-look side appear to have more cutting edge.

Bojan Miovski looks an excellent addition and fellow forward Jonny Hayes missed a glorious chance to level against Celtic last weekend.

There was enough in that performance to suggest that Aberdeen are good value at 21-20, against a much-changed St Mirren side who may need time to peak this season.

Hibs and Hearts clash in the first Edinburgh derby of the season on Sunday and the Jambos look good value to take the honours.

Former Bristol City and Sunderland boss Lee Johnson has taken over at Easter Road and that’s likely to bring a period of transition.

Hibs were beaten by Falkirk and Morton in the League Cup, and although the Hibees got the better of St Johnstone on the opening weekend, they were pretty much gifted that win by Murray Davidson's red card.

Hearts were missing Stephen Kingsley from a backline that lost John Souttar to Rangers in the summer, but they still managed a good 2-1 win at home to Ross County last weekend.

New signings Lawrence Shankland and Alan Forrest looked lively in attack and Robbie Neilson’s men are good value to win at Easter Road.
