The scars of Dumbarton’s relegation have healed so back the Sons to cap a good couple of weeks of pre-season by seeing off Stirling in their League Cup opener.

These League Two rivals are the bottom weights in Group A and will need an upset against any of Aberdeen, Raith or Peterhead to have even a whiff of going through to the knockout rounds.

But Dumbarton look the better placed of these two to get some points on the board and hit the top, for 24 hours at least.

Stevie Farrell’s men, relegated after losing their playoff to Edinburgh, have warmed up for their campaign in the basement with two good road successes in last few days, 3-2 at Gretna and 3-0 at Workington.

Stirling, in contrast, have endured a shocking summer since their return as they adjust to a sizeable turnover of personnel.

The Binos were thumped 4-1 by Alloa last week and then suffered a pair of setbacks in the North Lanarkshire Cup, going down 3-0 to Airdrie and 3-1 to Albion.
