Scottish Premiership preview

A late double from Scott Arfield rescued three points for Rangers at Aberdeen on Tuesday and that made it two from two under new boss Mick Beale. However, that victory was far from convincing and prior to the 3-2 win at Pittodrie the Gers made hard work of beating Hibs by the same scoreline.

Better is expected once Beale settles into the Ibrox dugout, but it’s been a pretty poor season for Rangers to date and it’s hard to get excited about the 1-3 on offer about the Light Blues taking three points at Ross County.

Of course, Rangers are a far superior outfit to the Staggies, but the Gers fell well below market expectations when losing at St Johnstone and drawing with St Mirren and Livingston in recent months, and it would be no surprise if Ross found the net.

Young right-back Adam Devine was given a tough time at Pittodrie and James Sands is far from convincing when operating at centre-half. It’s a Gers backline that has shipped 15 goals in their last nine matches and kept just a single clean sheet in that run of games so it could pay to back both sides to score in Dingwall.

Motherwell host Kilmarnock in Friday’s other Scottish Premiership contest and the Steelmen look a solid bet. Killie’s record on the road is abysmal and it’s unlikely to improve at Fir Park.

Derek McInnes’ side have taken just a single point from nine SPL away days this season and the shot-shy East Ayrshire outfit have scored only two goals on their travels.

That’s an extremely poor return but it’s no surprise when you consider that Kilmarnock failed to register a single shot on target at Rangers and Dundee United, they managed only one at Hibs and Livingston and hit just two against St Johnstone and Ross County.

McInnes is unlikely to alter his pragmatic approach and that will hand the initiative to Motherwell.

The Steelmen have won just one of their last eight matches, but they have played Celtic twice, Rangers, Hibs, Aberdeen and Hearts in that run and their sights are lowered considerably here.
