Scottish football preview

Livingston can put a midweek blip behind them on their return to the Highlands and ease through to a William Hill Scottish Cup quarter-final spot by winning at Inverness.

Gary Holt’s side were on a run of five successive wins when the wheels came off in midweek at Dingwall in a surprising 2-0 league loss to Ross County.

They return to a few miles from that defeat when they face an inconsistent Caley Thistle side, who had a depressing transfer window when they sold two of their key players, Coll Donaldson and Jamie McCart.

The Caledonian Stadium was a stronghold, but their last two games there have seen them lose to Arbroath and draw with Alloa, the two part-time teams in the Ladbrokes Championship.

Livi have plenty of goal threats with the excellent Lyndon Dykes assisted by Scott Pittman and Craig Sibbald and they should have a point to prove after this week’s disappointment.

Albion Rovers can win a basement clash in Ladbrokes League Two at Cliftonhill against bottom side Brechin City.

Brechin are trying to avoid their third straight relegation which could see them playing in the Highland League next season.

And they could be cut further adrift at the bottom against Kevin Harper’s battlers. The Coatbridge side fought back for an excellent point against big-spending Cove Rangers last week. They had secured another 2-2 draw against Queen’s Park at Hampden the previous week.

They have goals in their team, although defending has been a problem. However, their defence isn’t as leaky as Brechin’s.

City have conceded an average of well over two goals a game away from home and Euan East and Declan Byrne can take advantage.

Kilmarnock will surely seal the fate of Derek McInnes as Aberdeen boss if they can win at attractive odds on their trip to Pittodrie.

The Dons are floundering – they haven’t scored a goal in open play since Boxing Day and their fans have completely run out of patience with McInnes and his purgatory brand of football. Yet another dismal loss in midweek at home to St Johnstone was the final straw for many.

A Killie goal could see a full-scale revolt and the Ayrshire men will fancy their chances after winning at improving Hearts in midweek. Alex Dyer’s men can heap more misery on the Dons.
