Scottish Cup preview

Results haven’t been good for Hibernian, and after being hammered 3-0 by Hearts this month, Hibs would have been hoping for a kinder Scottish Cup draw than another Edinburgh derby.

However, Hibs have home advantage in the fourth round and things may about to turn in the favour of the Easter Road outfit.

Manager Lee Johnson is under pressure to get results after recording only three wins in 13 Scottish Premiership matches, but things are looking a little brighter in Leith.

Hibs have lost just two of their last five games - against runaway SPL leaders Celtic and against Hearts at Tynecastle. In between, the Hibees have hammered Livingston 4-0, they won 3-2 at Motherwell, and Johnson’s men had much of the play when drawing 2-2 with Dundee United last weekend.

Hearts crushed Aberdeen 5-0 on Wednesday, but they scored those five goals from just six shots on target and this contest comes just four days later.

Clearly, Celtic and Rangers are respected in the outright market, but there isn’t much value in the prices of the Old Firm pair and Hibs’ prospects of getting past Hearts and going on to lift the Scottish Cup look to have been underrated.

Scotland’s big two are the focus of the televised action on Saturday and they shouldn’t have any issues making it through to round five. Celtic are 1-18 to beat Morton at Parkhead, and even a changed Bhoys side, should cruise past the Championship outfit.

The Gers face their second road trip in four days, but St Johnstone, who have lost five games on the bounce, are unlikely to stop the 4-11 Ibrox machine.

At 7-10, Motherwell appear overpriced for their trip to Arbroath. The Steelmen have been playing well without winning in recent weeks and a cup clash with second-tier Arbroath should see them secure a victory.

The Red Lichties will be sniffing an upset, but Dick Campbell’s side have won only two of their last 12 matches and they aren’t anywhere near the level that saw them go so close to promotion last term. The forecast conditions are pretty settled for this time of year, and the Gayfield Park pitch looked in decent shape in Arbroath’s lastest home clash.

One contest that could see an upset is Stenhousemuir’s home tie with SPL side Livingston. The League Two Warriors have had their struggles this season, but they have lost only five of their last 18 games and they know how to find the net.

Gary Naysmith’s side have scored in every one of their home contests and they have notched 23 goals in 13 Ochilview Park matches this term. That’s at a lower level, and clearly Livi have the class edge, but taking a chance on a free-scoring side at a big price is appealing.
