Scotland's World Cup dream over after Slovenia draw
Kane helps England end campaign with victory
Scotland’s World Cup dream is over after they drew 2-2 in Slovenia on Sunday evening.
Leigh Griffiths’ strike had put Gordon Strachan’s men on course for the playoffs before Roman Bezjak equalised and the same player then broke Scottish hearts with his second of the evening.
Robert Snodgrass equalised to set-up a grandstand finish but Scotland were unable to find a winner.
That result was great news for Slovakia, who jumped above Scotland into second spot, although they face a nervous time waiting to see if it will be enough to be one of the best eight group runners-up.
Slovakia’s adjusted total in that race is 12 points, meaning Denmark and Northern Ireland secured their places in the playoffs following Scotland’s loss.
England were 1-0 winners over Lithuania with Harry Kane once again on target for the Three Lions. Kane’s first-half penalty was all that separated the sides. He had been 23-10 to notch first.
