Scotland 11-8 to reach Euro 2020 knockout stage in first finals since 1998
Shootout success in Serbia sparks Scottish celebrations
Scotland defied the odds in dramatic fashion on Thursday night to qualify for a major finals for the first time in 22 years, and the Tartan Army are going to have to do that and more to make a mark at next summer's delayed Euro 2020.
Buoyant Scottish fans were still pinching themselves on Friday as they soaked up the magnitude of their shootout playoff success in Serbia, and it's unlikely that Coral's quote of 6-1 that they go deeper into the European Championship finals than their Home Nations rivals, England and Wales, would have registered.
Scotland are just delighted to have made it to their first international finals since the 1998 World Cup and, in the process, set up a first major-finals showdown with the Auld Enemy since Euro 96 having been pitched into the same group as England, Croatia and the Czech Republic.
Steve Clarke's men, who will play both the Czechs and Croatia at Hampden Park, have been installed 16-1 outsiders to win Group D, are 9-2 with Coral to finish above England – who they meet at Wembley on June 18 – and 11-8 with the same firm to qualify for the knockout phase, something they have never achieved in ten previous finals.
The Scots, who are now unbeaten in nine matches following their dramatic triumph in Belgrade, are a top price 300-1 to win the tournament.
Northern Ireland narrowly missed out on making it a Home Nations clean sweep after they were beaten 2-1 in extra time by Slovakia.
And there was playoff joy for Hungary, who saw off Iceland, and North Macedonia, the 1,000-1 tournament outsiders after qualifying for their first finals at Georgia's expense.
