Tottenham cemented third place in the Premier League and highlighted their potential to fight for the title in a scintillating display at Goodison Park as they thrashed Everton 6-2.

Spurs, 20-1 from 25-1 to be crowned champions, are two points behind Manchester City and further four off leaders Liverpool after narrowing the gap in fine style.

Theo Walcott put Everton ahead but Tottenham led 3-1 by the break with Heung-Min Son, Dele Alli and Harry Kane on target.

Further goals from Son and Kane plus a Christmas cracker from Christian Eriksen put Mauricio Pochettino's men on cruise control, even after Gylfi Sigurdsson had briefly pulled Everton back to 4-2.

In hitting a double Kane moved up to 11 Premier League goals alongside Mohamed Salah, one behind top marksman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and is 5-2 to win the Golden Boot.

Pochettino's team have played only seven home league games this season compared to Liverpool's eight and City's ten so there could be potential for Tottenham to improve in the second half of the season.

The north London outfit, who are 2-11 to finish in the top four, will be aiming to make hay over Christmas with home games against Bournemouth and Wolves as well as a trip to Cardiff, whereas City host Liverpool on Thursday January 3.

Manchester United also have a comfortable looking batch of fixtures at home to Huddersfield and Bournemouth before an away outing at Newcastle and bet365 rate the Red Devils 13-8 for maximum points.
