La Liga Segunda Division
7pm Monday

Rayo Majadahonda made an uncertain start to their first ever campaign in the Segunda Division but put their first points on the board by winning 1-0 away to Gimnastic last Sunday and can follow it up with a home victory over Lugo.

The first priority for Madrid-based Rayo is to establish themselves in the second tier and, on the evidence of their first three games they should have a decent chance of staying up.

They slipped to a narrow 2-1 defeat at promotion hopefuls Zaragoza in their first match and lost 1-0 at home to Mallorca the following weekend.

It was a tough early schedule but Rayo did not get too despondent and their victory over Gimnastic will have given them increased confidence and belief.

Manager Antonio Iriondo is a club legend who has won three promotions during two spells at the helm.

But he is getting plenty of help from the owners who facilitated some serious squad strengthening this summer.

Atletico Madrid loanee Nicolás Schiappacasse and West Ham loanee Toni Martinez are among the players recruited and have made a decent start by getting on the scoresheet.

Of the 16 players used this season, 12 are new signings, so it may take some time before the team gel and reach their potential.

However, the club's ambition is obvious and they may have better prospects than Lugo, who are set for a bottom-half finish.

Lugo are on four points after Georgian midfielder Giorgi Aburjania's injury-time goal gave them a 3-2 success at home to Numancia.

But they haven't won any of their last ten away league games and could be heading for defeat against Rayo.
