Premier League top-four predictions
The battle for Champions League places is boiling down to a scrap for fourth place and Manchester United could be celebrating at the end of the season.
There is not much to choose between a handful of clubs outside the top three, although fourth-placed Arsenal are the team to catch.
The Gunners have a four-point cushion to West Ham, five to United and six to Tottenham, but all three of the chasers have played fewer games.
It should help Arsenal that they have no European football to worry about but their away record is poor and their strong home record of seven wins, one draw and one defeat could be punctured when they take on Manchester City and Liverpool in January and February.
West Ham were sixth last season and hope to do even better but there have been signs of waning performance in the run-up to Christmas.
David Moyes's squad is not the deepest and Europa League games could take a toll if the Hammers have an extended run.
Tottenham have improved under Antonio Conte – taking 11 points from five games – but they are the lowest scorers among the top seven and their packed fixture list could work against them.
It promises to be a tight race but United are the team with the greatest potential to put a winning run together.
Ralf Rangnick is unlikely to be the long-term answer to their problems but he is a far better qualified coach than predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and he can lead a hugely talented group to Champions League qualification.
