Manchester City took a giant step towards retaining the Premier League title after beating local rivals Manchester United 2-0 at Old Trafford.

The result saw City leapfrog Liverpool at the summit, moving a point clear of the Merseysiders with three matches remaining. City are strong odds-on favourites at 1-4 with Liverpool out to 3-1.

City struggled to create chances in the opening period but Pep Guardiola's side found their groove after the break with Bernardo Silva breaking the deadlock by beating David de Gea with a shot through Luke Shaw's legs.

If De Gea was arguably to blame for the opener he was definitely at fault when City doubled their advantage as Leroy Sane's shot went past the out-of-form Spanish stopper at his near post.

City know they will be crowned champions if they can win their remaining matches - away to Burnley, at home to Leicester and Brighton away on the final day.

Liverpool host Huddersfield on Friday before travelling to Newcastle and finishing against Wolves at Anfield.

Wolves showed how dangerous they remain against the big six with a stunning 3-1 success at home to Arsenal.

All the damage was done in the first half with Ruben Neves, Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota on target. Sokratis grabbed a late consolation for the fifth-placed Gunners.

Arsenal are 7-5 to finish in the top four with Chelsea cut to 4-5 and United can be backed at 6-1, while Tottenham are just 1-25.

Chelsea travel to Old Trafford in a potentially pivotal contest on Sunday.
