Champions League
from 6pm Wednesday

Viktoria Plzen were excellent in Bucharest, claiming a 2-2 draw against Steaua in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round tie and the Czechs can finish the job on home soil.

Confidence is sky-high at Plzen with Pavel Vrba, their title-winning coach, back at the club after a four-year absence.

Vrba has brought plenty of new faces in during the summer and early signs are promising.

They are without injured right-back David Limbersky, but he and many other first-teamers were missing on Saturday and Plzen still managed to kick off their league campaign with a stunning 4-0 demolition of Dukla Prague.

They were good enough to hold Roma at home and beat Austria Vienna in last season’s Europa League and they have lost just three matches on their own patch in all competitions over the last two years.

Steaua played their weekend league game on Sunday evening, a disappointing 1-1 draw against Uni Craiova, and the Romanians were pretty close to full strength.

Veteran midfielder Felipe Teixeira looks like he picked up a knock, although the 36-year-old also looks past it.
