Match preview

League One highflyers Plymouth were denied a major scalp when they conceded an injury-time leveller at Portsmouth last weekend, but they could make amends by defeating third-tier leaders Ipswich at Home Park on Sunday.

Victory would see third-placed Argyle usurp Ipswich at the top and they look decent value to get it despite the absence of Aston Villa loanee Finn Azaz, who is away on international duty.

Attacking midfielder Azaz is a rising star and has contributed three goals and one assist, but his likely replacement Danny Mayor is also an excellent player capable of causing problems for an Ipswich defence which buckled during last weekend's 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday, conceding twice in the final 20 minutes.

Ipswich won't be too disheartened because the trip to Hillsborough was a tough assignment which become even more difficult when the home crowd sensed their side could snatch a point. But there might be a similar dynamic against Plymouth, who usually excel in front of their vocal home support.

Argyle have won ten of their last 12 home league fixtures, including notable successes over Portsmouth (1-0), Peterborough (2-0) and Bolton (2-0).

They narrowly missed out on the playoffs last season but look stronger this term after a successful summer transfer window and a top-six finish is their aim.

Unbeaten Ipswich are aiming even higher but this is a second tough away assignment in a row and they are weakened by the absence of energetic wing-back Wes Burns, who was called up by Wales.

The Tractor Boys have an excellent squad and should be in the thick of the promotion race, but there are plenty of other contenders, including Argyle, who might just maintain their 100 per cent home record.

Key stat
