The feelgood factor of a new manager may just inspire Alaves to an unlikely positive result at Girona with Abelardo arriving at the Vitoria-based club this week.

Abelardo's first task is to lift the spirits of rock-bottom Alaves and to that end the new boss, who wants the side to defend high and play in either a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation, said: "All my teams try to be aggressive and intense."

The snowy weather in the Basque country has seen Alaves head to Barcelona on Saturday to prepare for this clash and that could be ideal for Abelardo to get his point across.

Current La Liga standings

It was only last season that Alaves finished ninth in La Liga as well as securing a spot in the Spanish Cup final so it could be that they are underrated at such large odds against a Girona side enjoying their debut campaign in Spain's top flight.

Girona, who beat Real Madrid earlier in the season, have played some lovely football but yet it is worth remembering they have still won only four matches which is off-putting given they are strong favourites.

None of those wins was by more than one goal so it may pay to take the outsiders on the handicap.

Recommendation
Alaves +1 on Asian handicap
