DC United are setting the early pace in the MLS Eastern Conference and they can maintain their flying start with victory over a New York City side who are struggling to adapt to life without free-scoring Spaniard David Villa.

New York City were conference semi-finalists last season, with Villa netting 15 times, but they have failed to win any of their opening six games this season without him and Domenec Torrent may be regretting the sale of their star striker to Japanese club Vissel Kobe.

The Bronx Blues have drawn five of those opening matches but their efforts on the road are concerning, with defensive issues holding them back.

The visitors have shipped nine times in three away outings, with a 4-0 tanking at Toronto highlighting their vulnerability.

DC failed to score in their last two home games, but Wayne Rooney was sent off early in the second half of their 4-0 defeat to MLS Cup favourites Los Angeles FC and he was suspended for the goalless draw with Montreal.

DC are a different side with Rooney leading the line and his return to the starting line-up was celebrated with a 3-2 win at Colorado Rapids.

Rooney doesn’t only carry a potent attacking threat, but he raises the spirits of his teammates and has linked up with Argentinian duo Luciano Acosta and Lucas Rodriguez to excellent effect.

City seem to have forgotten how to win and happy hosts DC can punish their defensive frailty.
