Minnesota United v Portland Timbers: MLS betting preview, free tip & TV details
Timbers look value in National Sports Center tussle between two in-form sides
MLS
Sky Sports Football, 9pm Sunday
Two in-form sides do battle at Minnesota’s National Sports Center hoping to consolidate their place in the Western Conference playoffs, but Portland Timbers looks the value bet.
Minnesota’s 7-1 demolition of MLS debutants Cincinnati in June sparked them into life and they are unbeaten in six league outings.
But Timbers are also in excellent nick, with only two defeats in their last 14 games, and last Sunday’s 4-0 romp at home to a star-studded LA Galaxy, who are flying high in third in the Western Conference, suggests they shouldn’t fear anyone.
The Timbers have also won three of their last four on the road, claiming the scalps of Eastern Conference pacesetters Philadelphia Union, New York City and Seattle Sounders.
All three of those victims will have their eye on MLS Cup glory, so Portland have no problem raising their game for the big occasion.
Giovanni Savarese has some serious talent at his disposal, particularly in midfield with Diego Valeri pulling the strings alongside Sebastian Blanco and Jeremy Ebobisse.
They have linked up to good effect with striker Brian Fernandez, who tops Portland’s scoring charts with ten goals, and it is difficult to see Minnesota containing such attacking talent.
Despite their upturn in form, the hosts have been held to back-to-back draws by Real Salt Lake (1-1) and Vancouver Whitecaps (0-0).
The draw at home to Vancouver, who have won only four of their 24 league games, is particularly concerning as Adrian Heath’s men managed just one shot on target.
A big improvement will be required if they are to lower the colours of progressive Portland.
Recommendation
Portland Timbers
