Match preview

Gary Rowett has done wonderful things in a short space of time at The Den and can continue the good work by avoiding defeat to promotion-chasing West Brom.

The Lions are well set for a run at the playoffs courtesy of a fine run under Rowett. And while it’s wins rather than draws they need in that quest for top-six status, the stalemate looks the bet here.

Certainly draws are specialities of both clubs.

Millwall have shared the spoils in 12 fixtures this season, West Brom in 11 and, on paper at least, there doesn’t appear to be a great deal between them just now once home advantage is factored in.

The Sky Bet Championship table tells us that Slaven Bilic’s men are 11 points superior to the Londoners but the advantage was 17 points at Christmas and the gulf is evidently narrowing.

Partly that’s due to a dip in form from Albion. Last week’s unimpressive 2-0 win over struggling Luton snapped a seven-game winless streak in the league.

And partly it’s down to the transformation under Rowett of Millwall, who have suffered only two league defeats in over three months, the second of which was in heartbreaking fashion at Leeds.

They went to The Hawthorns twice in August, winning in the League Cup, drawing in the league, and have much to be positive about beyond the match-winning form of winger Jed Wallace and the little-and-large threat posed by the front two of Matt Smith and Tom Bradshaw.

West Brom are better with Matheus Pereira in the side so his return from a ban is welcome while Bilic may be tempted to hand a debut to winger Kamil Grosicki, who looks a sound deadline-day buy from Hull.

Key stat

These sides have amassed 23 draws between them in the Championship this season
