Mick McCarthy is rated as the favourite by bookmakers to fill the vacancy to become Ireland's next manager after Martin O'Neill and his assistant Roy Keane parted company by mutual consent following a terrible run of results.

McCarthy, who is out of work after departing Ipswich at the end of last season, is evens with BoyleSports to return to the Irish national team position he held between 1996-2002.

Dundalk boss Stephen Kenny is a 6-1 shot, with former England manager available at 10-1 with Ladbrokes.

Paul Cook and Steve Bruce are available at 16-1 and 20-1 respectively to replace O'Neill, who was in charge for a sorry Nations League campaign which saw Ireland suffer relegation to League C.

Ireland have won only one of their last 11 matches, a 2-1 success over USA in June, and have failed to score in their last four outings, dropping down into the third pot of seeds for the Euro 2020 qualifying draw which takes place in Dublin on Sunday December 2.
