The United States of America showed they were a class apart as they retained the women's World Cup by beating Holland in Sunday's final but the European Championship looks a more attainable trophy for England, who are 3-1 favourites with Coral to be crowned champions on home soil in 2021.

Phil Neville's side, beaten by the USA in the semi-finals in France, were one of seven European teams in the quarter-finals, so the strength in depth of the continental nations is there for all to see.

Neville is likely to stick with the core of the squad who competed this summer with goalkeeper Karen Bardsley the oldest member of the travelling party at 34.

Karen Carney has announced her retirement, although Arsenal midfielder Jordan Nobbs was ruled out of the World Cup because of a knee injury and should be a big part of future squads, making the Lionesses a stronger unit for 2021.
