France should be too sharp for Germany's unconvincing defence

World champions can continue impressive form

Germany kept faith with Joachim Low despite a shock group-stage exit at the World Cup but the coach is under pressure after Saturday's 3-0 Nations League defeat to Holland.

That made it six defeats in ten games for one of the powerhouses of international football and Low's men must pick themselves up for their clash with world champions France.

The teams played out an entertaining 0-0 draw in their League A Group 1 opener, with Germany bossing the shots-on-target count 8-5 and winning ten corners to Les Bleus' two.

They were similarly proactive in attack against Holland, who put a gloss on the scoreline with two goals in the last four minutes of normal time.

Germany took 12 corners to Holland's four but just four of their 21 attempts on goal tested Dutch keeper Jasper Cillessen.

They are creating chances but there is clearly a lack of confidence in front of goal. That shouldn't be an issue for a France side who swaggered through the knockout stages of the World Cup with great joie de vivre, scoring 11 goals in four games from the last 16 onwards.

France are missing injured centre-back Samuel Umtiti, a key player during their World Cup campaign, so backing Les Bleus to win and both teams to score could be the way to go.

They beat Holland 2-1 in the Nations League and had to come back from 2-0 down to salvage a friendly draw with Iceland on Thursday.

But their attacking players should relish facing a Germany defence who have kept one clean sheet in 11 internationals and Kylian Mbappe – 15 goals in 14 appearances for club and country since the start of the World Cup knockout stage – is a particular threat.

The Stade de France clash is undoubtedly the highlight of Tuesday's Nations League programme, although Ukraine should continue their impressive form as they bid to complete a double over the Czech Republic and Norway look short at 4-6 against a Bulgaria side who won the reverse fixture 1-0.
