Hoffenheim failed to cut it with Europe’s best on their Champions League debut, finishing bottom of their group, but that will at least allow them to improve their Bundesliga position starting with an away trip to Werder Bremen, where bookmakers look correct in making them favourites.

Julien Nagelsmann’s visitors have not won in the Bundesliga since beating Augsburg on November 10, clocking up four straight draws since their last victory. But Saturday’s latest stalemate with second-placed Borussia Monchengladbach pointed suggested they are not far from that elusive win.

Hoffenheim dominated possession and recorded 18 shots to Gladbach’s four, recording an expected goals figure of 3.6 but failing to find the net, and a more clinical display from Andrej Kramaric and Arsenal loanee Reiss Nelson will surely see them return to winning ways.

Werder have won just one of their last six Bundesliga matches – a victory against struggling Fortuna Dusseldorf – and went into the midweek round of fixtures having conceded more home goals than any other team.
