Match preview

Ghana are the higher-ranked team and have home advantage but there has been enough recent encouragement from South Africa to suggest that Bafana Bafana can secure a positive result.

The road to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations starts here with a fixture where the onus, certainly for the visitors, will be on avoiding defeat.

New head coach Molefi Ntseki, an integral part of the South African coaching team during their run to the ACoN quarter-finals in Egypt in July, was preaching a defensive approach long before he flew into Accra.

His opposite number Kwesi Appiah is, conversely and predictably, saying his side will be going for the win, though a draw wouldn’t be a bad result for either. Sudan and Sao Tome are the lightweights making up Group C with the top two qualifying for the finals in Cameroon.

Ghana have to make amends for their nightmare in Egypt in the summer, when they exited the competition on penalties against Tunisia.

The Ayew brothers, Andre and Jordan, will be integral to what they do while Thomas Partey is the glue holding everything together in midfield.

They are ranked 51st in the world, which is 21 places higher than the visitors, though there is a feelgood factor in South Africa at the end of a decent year.

These teams played out a 0-0 draw in the Gulf prior to the Cup of Nations finals and another tight, low-scoring game is anticipated.
