Match preview

Augsburg eased their Bundesliga relegation fears with a 3-0 victory at Schalke on Sunday and can edge one step closer to survival by beating bottom club Paderborn.

Heiko Herrlich’s hosts had suffered eight defeats in their last ten games prior to stunning Schalke but had locked horns with each of Germany’s top-seven in that period and were not disgraced given their high-class opposition.

Augsburg scored three times in a home defeat to Borussia Dortmund, bagged twice against visitors Borussia Monchengladbach while it took an injury-time strike from Daniel Ginczek to give Wolfsburg a 2-1 victory on their Bundesliga return.

The Bavarians capitalised on Schalke’s demise last weekend and should relish the challenge of hosting a shot-shy Paderborn, who are without a win eight.

Steffen Baumgart’s strugglers have shared the spoils in their last two matches. However, they registered just one shot on target in a bore draw at relegation rivals Fortuna Dusseldorf and scored with their only chance in Saturday’s 1-1 stalemate at home to Hoffenheim, who enjoyed 61 per cent of the possession.

Former Norwich man Dennis Srbeny, five goals in ten Bundesliga appearances, is the one shining light for Paderborn but if Augsburg can contain him then they should prevail.

Another important game in the Bundesliga’s relegation scrap sees Union Berlin host Mainz, who both arrive on the back of heavy weekend defeats.

Union Berlin, without a win in four, were thumped 4-0 at city rivals Hertha, while Mainz were trounced 5-0 at home to Leipzig and have won just three of their last 13 games.

There is a severe lack of confidence in both camps and that could lead to over 2.5 goals.

Mainz’s 13 away matches this season have featured 55 goals (an average of 4.2 per game) and each of their last five road trips have seen the net bulge on at least four occasions.

Union Berlin have scored exactly twice in six of their last nine home games but are without a clean sheet in seven and defensively are suspect.

Schalke have conceded seven without reply in losses to Borussia Dortmund and Augsburg and make little appeal on their trip to draw-specialists Fortuna Dusseldorf, who have tightened up since January’s appointment of Uwe Rosler with seven stalemates from his ten games in charge.

Leipzig snapped a three-game drawing sequence with a 5-0 win over Mainz on Sunday and are 3-10 to follow up at home to Hertha Berlin.

However, Hertha have won both of their matches to nil since manager Bruno Labadia’s arrival and are sure to offer much stiffer resistance than Mainz managed.

Elsewhere, Hoffenheim host Cologne in a match difficult to get a handle on between mid-table sides separated by just two points.
