Five things we learned from the weekend's football

Phil Foden has golden future thanks to influence of David Silva

1 Phil Foden can fill the void when David Silva calls it a day

The mercurial David Silva continues to mesmerise in the Manchester City midfield but there can be no doubt his influence is having an effect on those around him and none more so than Phil Foden, who turned in a man-of-the-match performance in City's 4-1 FA Cup win at Newport.

Foden has looked a composed figure in Pep Guardiola's midfield when selected and he showed plenty of confidence in front of goal as he helped himself to two goals in the Rodney Parade victory.

The 18-year-old has bagged five goals this season - all in the domestic cups - but there looks to be plenty more to come as his contributions increase and he looks a ready-made replacement when the time comes for 33-year-old Silva to step back.

Foden, along with Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus, Bernardo Silva and Alexander Zinchenko, are likely to shape the City side in the years to come and they can use the knowledge Silva has handed them to create golden futures.

2 Newport need to be careful

The defeat to City on Saturday ended a memorable FA Cup run which saw the Welsh side reach the fifth round with victories over Wrexham, Premier League giants Leicester and Sky Bet Championship highflyers Middlesbrough, but Newport need to be cautious in the coming weeks.

Having ridden the crest of the cup wave, the Exiles turn their attentions back to the bread and butter of League Two football and they need to ensure their fall back to earth doesn't come with a huge bump.

Michael Flynn's men may look comfortable in 15th place, 13 points clear of the relegation zone, but a cup hangover could lead to a sequence of bad results which would then have the Exiles nervously looking over their shoulders.

It's 2,000-1 with Sky Bet that they go down, but with tricky away trips to Notts County and MK Dons up next, they must ensure that price doesn't start to plummet as the season reaches its conclusion.

3 Brighton a touch of value to go down

Brighton will be delighted to have reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup following their 2-1 win over Derby but their cup campaign could come at a cost.

The victory was a timely boost for the Seagulls, who hadn't won for seven games and are 10-1 to go down following a run of one win in 11 Premier League matches.

Those odds could easily shorten in the coming weeks and Albion need to ensure their cup exploits don't become a costly distraction.

4 Lions also an endangered species

Millwall are also into the last eight of the FA Cup after they got the better of AFC Wimbledon 1-0 in the only non-televised game of the round on Saturday but a cup run may not be what the Londoners need right now either.

Neil Harris's men are in a perilous position in the Championship - 20th and just two points out of the drop zone - and their cup efforts are papering over the cracks of some poor league performances.

The Lions haven't won in five league outings and with fixtures against Derby, Hull, Norwich, Leeds, West Brom and Sheffield United among their final 15 games the 11-1 about them slipping into League One looks tempting.

5 Norwich unlikely to pay the penalty

Norwich missed their sixth penalty from seven they have taken in the Sky Bet Championship this season but it didn't matter as they got the better of Bolton 4-0 to go two points clear at the top of the table.

The Canaries are flying and with striker Teemu Pukki in such fine form - he bagged his 23rd goal of the season at Bolton on Saturday - Daniel Farke's side look justified 8-15 joint-favourites with Leeds to be promoted back to the Premier League after a three-year absence.
