Fenerbahce's feeble season heading for low-key ending

Fenerbahce's last chance to save their season ended in an epic 10-9 cup semi-final penalty shootout defeat at the hands of Istanbul Basaksehir and they could be heading for a low-key final three rounds of the Turkish Super Lig.

There will be no Champions League football for Fener next season but it would take a serious collapse to miss out on Europa League qualification so don't expect fireworks at mid-table Genclerbirligi.

Fourth-placed Fener would probably like to finish above third-placed Galatasaray - they are currently one point behind their hated rivals with this match in hand - as it would mean a longer summer holiday as well as claiming local bragging rights.

If they finish fourth their Europa League campaign will begin on July 13, which isn't ideal considering the Turkish Super Lig does not end until early June, but a third-place finish would mean the European adventure begins a fortnight later.

That will be under a new coach with veteran boss Dick Advocaat taking over as Holland's national team for the third time and the Dutchman could struggle to lift his squad after the semi-final setback on Wednesday.

Hosts Genclerbirligi's matches are averaging just 1.94 goals per game this season, easily the lowest in Turkey's top flight, with 21 of their 31 matches landing for under 2.5 goal backers.

More than half (17 of 31) of Fener's games have also finished with fewer than three goals so it's a surprise to see odds-against quotes about the same happening again.
