Match preview

It was a familiar story for England Under-21's as late lapses in concentration saw them squander a two-goal lead in a friendly against Slovenia on Friday but they should have too much for Austria back in competitive action at Stadium MK.

Aidy Boothroyd's side dominated for much of the match, recording 78 per cent possession, winning the shot count 15-8 and deservedly leading thanks to goals from Eddie Nketiah and Sam Surridge.

A raft of second-half substitutions saw them lose some of their rhythm and the hosts benefited from an under-hit pass from goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and a deflected free-kick to pinch a draw.

Conceding late goals was a hallmark of England's underwhelming performance at the U21 Championships in Italy last summer, but this is a much-changed side and qualifying wins over Turkey (3-2) and Kosovo (2-0) have emphasised they are at their best when the likes of Phil Foden and Callum Hudson-Odoi are allowed to play on the front foot.

Austria have racked up ten goals in their three qualifying victories and can play their part in a lively encounter, but this England side represent a significant step up in quality.
