England finished third in the Nations League after beating Switzerland on penalties following a goalless 120 minutes of action in Guimaraes.

Jordan Pickford saved from Josip Drmic after England had been successful with all six of their penalties, including one from Pickford.

Gareth Southgate will have been delighted to see his players show such composure given five of those selected - Harry Maguire, Ross Barkley, Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling and Pickford - did not participate from the spot in last summer's shootout triumph over Colombia.

Only Eric Dier stepped up again from that World Cup win and Southgate will therefore have full faith in his squad should penalties again be required at Euro 2020.

England were unable to score in normal play despite dominating, hitting the woodwork on four occasions, while substitute Callum Wilson's late strike was correctly ruled out by VAR for a foul on Swiss defender Manuel Akanji.

The Three Lions are generally available at 5-1 to win next year's European Championship with only 7-2 shots France ahead of them in the betting.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was England's best player in the the third-place playoff and the Liverpool right-back must be pushing hard to displace Kyle Walker from Southgate's preferred 11.
