Preview

Burton had another decent run in the EFL Cup this season, reaching the fourth round, but the EFL Trophy offers them their most realistic route to Wembley and they can advance to the knockout stages by defeating Mansfield at the Pirelli Stadium.

Nigel Clough's Brewers have lacked consistency in Sky Bet League One and are 14th, six points outside the top six.

Reaching the playoffs remains the aim but Burton often play their best football in the cups and can focus fully on Mansfield, knowing that Saturday's scheduled league fixture at home to Southend has been postponed.

Mansfield contest a Sky Bet League Two fixture away to Macclesfield on Saturday and manager John Dempster may want to keep a few key men fresh for the weekend.

He may not pick a full-strength side and that would make a tough task even more difficult.

Sunderland were EFL Trophy finalists last season, losing to Portsmouth on penalties, and they can reach the last 32 by defeating Scunthorpe at Glanford Park.

A draw would be enough for Scunny to remain second in Northern Section Group A and extend their stay in the competition.

But Scunthorpe are likely to be low on confidence after a 4-1 defeat at Crawley in the FA Cup first round and could struggle to contain the Black Cats, who have a free weekend coming up.
