Match preview
Manchester United have not won a major trophy since Jose Mourinho steered them to Europa League and EFL Cup glory in 2017 but they can advance to the quarter-finals of this season's League Cup by defeating Championship leaders Burnley at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
The match comes at an interesting time with United getting ready for their first competitive action since the season paused for the World Cup and Burnley taking to the field for a third time in 11 days.
That may mean the Clarets are slightly sharper, but they are likely to come up against a strong United side with Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag keen to get some competitive minutes into his players before the Premier League resumes.
United are back in top-flight action next Tuesday with a home game against Nottingham Forest, so Wednesday's tie could be a useful exercise in topping up fitness levels.
However, Ten Hag will also be aware that his employers demand success so his immediate focus will be on securing a place in the last eight.
Ten Hag's selection is complicated by the unavailability of centre-back pairing Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, who were on opposing sides in Sunday's World Cup final, while the other United players who went to Qatar are likely to be at different stages of their recovery.
However, the Dutchman still has the scope to put out a very experienced side and it is probably fair that United have been chalked up as warm odds-on favourites to win inside 90 minutes.
Burnley head coach Vincent Kompany might consider a few changes in an effort to keep his players fresh for the upcoming hectic festive schedule, but confidence levels in his squad should be high.
The Clarets have won eight of their last nine matches, including an impressive come-from-behind 3-1 success at home to Middlesbrough on Saturday.
Burnley are the top goalscorers in the Championship having found the net 46 times, but they have conceded 24 goals, of which five came in a defeat at title rivals Sheffield United in early November.
Kompany's defence is destabilised by the absence of two right-backs for the trip to Old Trafford – Connor Roberts is suspended and Vitinho injured – and the enforced re-shuffle should encourage United, who can prevail in an entertaining game.
Key stat
Burnley have scored in each of their last 22 games.
