Cup specialists Benfica could edge a classic in Aves

Since the Taca de Liga was formed 11 years ago, Benfica have been the dominant force - winning it on seven occasions - and they should keep their hopes of another cup success alive by easing past Desportivo Aves.

The Eagles travel to Aves having won their last seven matches in all competitions, which includes a 6-2 tanking of Braga on Sunday, and it would take a brave punter to back against them in an event they ultimately thrive in.

Quite remarkably, Benfica have lost only one of their 48 League Cup games in 90 minutes and this season’s two group wins over Rio Ave and Pacos de Ferreira suggest that record should remain intact.

Rui Vitoria’s men may need only a point to confirm their progress but they are unlikely to take any chances, and while they will have one eye on the title, Aves are involved in a relegation scrap and could probably do without the extra distraction.

The hosts sit third-bottom in the Portuguese top-flight having suffered four straight defeats, and have conceded 12 goals in the process.

However, to Aves' credit, they pack a potent punch going forward and that could help them in their battle for survival. They have scored 17 goals in 14 league games - no side in the bottom-eight have netted more.

Jose Mota's side have found the net in each of their last 11 games, including on trips to third-placed Sporting and sixth-placed Belenenses, and they can grab a consolation.
