Panama finished above USA in World Cup qualifying and look a shade overpriced to avoid defeat when taking on the Stars and Stripes in a Group D clash at the Concacaf Gold Cup.

Both are through to the quarter-finals after taking maximum points from their first two games but USA's goal difference (+10) is superior to Panama's (+4), meaning they need just a draw in Kansas City to seal top spot.

USA thumped Trinidad and Tobago 6-0 in Cleveland on Saturday, scoring five goals in the final 30 minutes, but it is is hard to properly judge Gregg Berhalter's side until they come up against a better standard of opposition.

They should receive a more serious test from Panama, who are hoping to build on last summer's World Cup finals.

Panama failed to secure any points at Russia 2018, where they were well beaten by Belgium (3-0) and England (6-1).

But they have started the Concacaf Gold Cup well, posting dominant victories over Trinidad and Tobago (2-0) and Guyana (4-2).

Drawing concrete conclusions from victories over such weak opposition would be foolhardy but Panama gained a point more than the USA on the road to the World Cup and are likely to be competitive in Cleveland.

Trinidad & Tobago have had a miserable tournament but can end on a high note by defeating Guyana.

Neither side have picked up any points but Trinidad's squad looks stronger and they have a decisive advantage on the Fifa rankings (92 to 177).
