Classy Inter can shine against bitter Milan rivals

Inter needed penalties to see off Serie C outfit Pordenone in the last round of the Coppa Italia but should fare much better against bitter rivals Milan in their quarter-final clash at the San Siro.

Milan derbies can often level up the playing field but Inter have looked a cut above this season and should be fully wound up with stakes particularly high.

Inter sit eight places and 16 points clear of their city rivals in the league, which highlights their class edge, and are unlikely to take their foot off the gas.

Inter have lost successive league matches against Udinese (3-1) and Sassuolo (1-0) but Milan have also lost their last two and there is a lot less to like about the manner of their defeats.

Genaro Gattuso's troops were thumped 3-0 at second-bottom Verona and then folded tamely in a 2-0 defeat at home to Atalanta and their inconsistencies make them tough to get right.

Inter are the safer alternative, regularly giving their all, and the free-scoring Mauro Icardi, who netted a hat-trick in a 3-2 league win in October, could once again cause Milan all sorts of problems.

Icardi is Serie A's leading marksman with 17 goals and has scored four times in his last two meetings with Milan. The 5-6 on offer about him to score at any time is sure to attract plenty of support.

Luciano Spalletti's men have lost just one of the last six derby dust-ups and they have lost only one of their last 12 competitive matches at the San Siro.
