Chivas can count on plenty of support in New York

The Red Bulls are strong in Harrison where home advantage counts for plenty, but visitors Chivas will have the lion’s share of the vocal support in the second leg of their Concacaf Champions League semi-final.

Chivas are a big deal in Guadalajara but every bit as big in Newark, and thousands of ex-pat Mexicans will be in the Red Bull Arena to roar on Matias Almeyda’s men.

It doesn’t shift the balance of power completely but this talented Chivas outfit will take any edge on offer, and some noise from the cheap seats can help them to win the match and the tie.

The Goats lead 1-0 from the first leg, an utterly forgettable contest at the Estadio Akron where Jesse Marsch set up his side not to lose and just failed in his quest.

Bradley Wright-Phillips, the man whose goals have got the Bulls to the last four, had the MLS side’s best chance of the night and it wasn’t a particularly good one.

The American outfit struggled to deal with Rodolfo Pizarro and if the hosts dare to be more adventurous the second time around, as they’ll have to at some point, a player of Pizarro’s ability can cause havoc on the counter.

Chivas have already taken care of Seattle and fully expect to complete the job against the Red Bulls.

Both teams are short-handed. Centre-back Jair Pereira is missing for the Mexican outfit with a retrospective ban, while the Bulls must do without central defender Aurelien Collin and winger Alex Muyl, who are both suspended.
