Match preview

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer has been battling an injury crisis but his appetite for a challenge has not changed since his playing days and he can come up with a winning formula for the Sky Bet Championship home match with Cardiff.

A lack of players will not be an issue for the Welsh club, who have a deep squad with competition for places in all areas.

However, the Bluebirds make the trip to London at the start of a transition period with Neil Harris replacing Neil Warnock in the dugout.

Warnock will be a hard act to follow as he is one of the most successful managers outside the Premier League.

But he looks a logical choice due to his excellent track record - he firmly established Millwall as a second-tier club - and his direct style of football, which is similar to Warnock's.

The problem for Harris is that many Cardiff supporters are yearning for a different approach and they may not get fully behind him unless results take a positive turn.

Cardiff had hoped to feature prominently in the promotion race but they have won just five of 16 matches and are yet to pick up maximum points on their travels.

Given their poor away results it is a surprise to see them as favourites against the Addicks, who are one point above them.

Charlton's absentee list, which numbers at least nine players, may explain why they are attracting so little market support.

But the majority of their key players are available and they may be able to field star striker Lyle Taylor, who is back in training after almost three months out.

Taylor was unavailable when Charlton suffered a 2-1 loss at Millwall before the international break.

They had eight players unavailable at the Den but could easily have won, and their chances of beating Cardiff are strong enough to warrant a wager at odds-against with the draw no bet.

Key stat

Cardiff have not won any of their last eight away games.
