Match preview

West Brom needed a controversial penalty to secure a 1-0 victory at Preston on Monday but they are likely to put on a more convincing performance against Swansea at the Hawthorns.

One of the secrets to being a consistent side in the Sky Bet Championship is having the ability to win games in different ways.

In their last home fixture, Albion showed off their attacking attributes while winning 4-1 at home to Bristol City.

But they had to be more patient at Preston and got a bit of luck in the 90th minute when referee Oliver Langford harshly penalised goalkeeper Declan Rudd for a foul on Kyle Edwards.

Charlie Austin gleefully smashed home the penalty to make it five wins on the bounce and lift Albion back above Leeds in a see-saw title race.

Finishing in the top two is Albion's priority and they have a great chance because Slaven Bilic has built a well-balanced squad with quality in key areas.

On-loan attackers Grady Diangana (from West Ham) and Matheus Pereira (Sporting Lisbon) have the ability to play at a higher level and regularly provide moments of match-winning magic.

The duo's extra quality could give Albion the edge over Swansea, who are well-coached team lacking players of outstanding ability.

Swansea continue play an attractive, high-intensity brand of football but lost two key players this summer when Dan James and Oli McBurnie were sold to Manchester United and Sheffield United.

Borja Baston had a purple patch in August, scoring five goals, but has not scored since September and found himself out of the side.

England Under-21 striker Sam Surridge is highly thought of but Swansea are not the finished article in attack and their goal tally of 24 is the joint-lowest of the top-half clubs.

Struggling to score goals was not such an issue when they were reeling off clean sheets but defending has become more difficult since key centre-back Joe Rodon underwent ankle surgery in October.

The Swans have not achieved a shutout in their last five matches and their shaky defence is likely to cost them against the division's top scorers.

Key stat

West Brom have scored at least two goals in each of their last seven home games.
