Match preview
Manchester United's homecoming party for Cristiano Ronaldo could not have gone much better on Saturday as they steamrolled Newcastle 4-1.
The returning Ronaldo scored a brace and is as short as 11-4 for the Premier League golden boot this season. The Red Devils are also the joint-top scorers in the division this season with 11.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were involved in plenty of high-scoring affairs in the Champions League last season - all six of their group games finished with three or more goals as they came home third in their section.
After dropping into the Europa League, Man United put in a series of impressive performances as they cruised through the competition before losing out on penalties in the final to Villarreal.
That failure made it three years in charge without a trophy for Solskjaer and after his side's summer spending spree, which included the signing of Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho, the pressure will be on to get some silverware.
They face a fairly gentle beginning to their new Champions League season, taking on Swiss champions Young Boys in Bern.
Ex-Huddersfield and Schalke manager David Wagner took over in the summer as former boss Gerardo Seoane’s success with the side led to him departing for Bayer Leverkusen.
Young Boys made the last 16 of the Europa League last season, where they were knocked out by Ajax. Wagner's side have made a slightly stuttering start to their league defence though, winning just two of their first five league games.
This is the Swiss side's second appearance in the Champions League group stages after the 2017-18 season in which they also faced Manchester United. The English team were victorious 1-0 at home and 3-0 away in their two previous meetings.
Young Boys came through six qualifying matches to reach the group stage and those ties produced 21 goals. Both teams scored in five of those six games as well and another high-scoring affair looks to be on the cards here.
Even with the likely rotation to the starting line-up, Solskjaer has an embarrassment of riches at his disposal, particularly going forward. He may also see this as an opportunity to blood some of the club's exciting younger players such as Anthony Elanga.
Manchester United should be able to get their Champions League campaign off to a flying start and put on a show in the process.
