Tottenham set to make life difficult for Pep Guardiola's men in first leg
TV: BT Sport 2, 8pm Tuesday
Manchester City have been here before.
Well not exactly here – after all this will be just the second official match at Tottenham’s new stadium – but City crumbled at the Champions League quarter-final stage against English opponents in front of a fervent home faithful last year.
For Liverpool at Anfield read Spurs at the new White Hart Lane and, while Tottenham are unlikely to match the Merseysiders' stunning 3-0 first-leg triumph of 12 months ago, Mauricio Pochettino's men could make life more difficult for City than the markets anticipate.
City are the best team in England and probably the best in Europe, although even the best don't win all the time and given what happened at Anfield it would not be unreasonable for Pep Guardiola's outfit to happily take a score draw back to Manchester.
The Premier League champions have won 21 of their last 23 matches, including each of the last eight to stay on course for the quadruple.
Those eight games, however, have been against soft opposition with West Ham, Bournemouth, a virtual reserve Watford side, Schalke, Swansea, Fulham, Cardiff and Brighton putting up various forms of resistance.
None of those are as strong as Tottenham, who should be fresh having had the weekend off, whereas City tackled Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final success which they won 1-0 on Saturday.
To still be on for a clean sweep of trophies highlights the talent of City's side and the weekend bench at Wembley featured Leroy Sane, Riyad Mahrez, Fernandinho and John Stones, and such is the depth Vincent Kompany didn't even get kitted up.
But it was a costly success with Kyle Walker joining Oleksandr Zinchenko on the treatment table. Benjamin Mendy isn't fully fit, neither is Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne, subbed after 65 minutes on Saturday, is still struggling to see out matches.
City have also trailed in three of their four Champions League away matches this season as well as losing at Chelsea in the league and drawing at Anfield which suggests there will be better opportunities to back an away side at odds-on before the season is out.
Tottenham have lost their way on the road but were much-improved in the recent 2-1 defeat at Liverpool when only a sloppy last-gasp own goal cost them a point.
This is at home, in front of a hyped-up crowd, and with Mauricio Pochettino able to call upon his four main forward threats – Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Heung-Min Son and Christian Eriksen.
It's unlikely to be enough to reach the semi-finals but Spurs can at least stay in the tie for the first 90 minutes.
