Match preview

Dele Alli's goal was the one moment of exceptional quality produced by Tottenham in Sunday's 1-1 draw at Everton and the 23-year-old looks a likely match-winner against Red Star Belgrade in the Serbian capital.

Mauricio Pochettino has been very protective of Alli, who struggled for fitness and fluency at the start to the season and was left out of last month's England squad.

And the Spurs manager will have felt vindicated when Alli made his mark at the weekend, cutting through the Everton defence and firing a well-struck shot past Jordan Pickford.

Alli looked a more confident player after his goal and his return to something like his old self is a much-needed boost for Spurs, who are approaching a key moment in their season.

There is a lot of room for improvement in the Premier League with Spurs languishing in 11th-placed, ten points adrift of the top four.

And Champions League knockout stage qualification remains far from certain despite the thumping 5-0 success over Red Star 15 days ago.

Spurs were far superior to the Serbians but are only a point above them in Group B and a poor result would put them under huge pressure with a trip to Bayern Munich to come on matchday six.

Red Star are unlikely to be anywhere near as poor as they were at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Exactly one year ago they won 2-0 at home to Liverpool with a performance full of focus and intensity.

Centre-forward Milan Pavkov bagged both goals that evening and could come back into the side after being restricted to a cameo role on matchday three.

Spurs will need to cut out the service to Pavkov and that means getting close to attacking midfielder Marko Marin, a former Chelsea player and German international, who showed flashes of his talent in north London.

Red Star will look to start quickly and feed off the energy of a large crowd who have a reputation for being noisy and hostile on big Champions League nights.

But Spurs are far from inexperienced at handling tough away trips and their hopes received a massive boost when Harry Kane, absent from the Everton game through illness, made the trip to Belgrade.

Kane has netted four of Tottenham's nine goals in Group B, including the first and last goals of the 5-0 victory over Red Star, and is sure to attract plenty of attention from the home defence.

But an over-emphasis on the England captain will leave space elsewhere and Alli looks the man most likely to take advantage.

Alli will be desperate to build on his goal at Goodison and looks overpriced to net the opener for a second successive game.

Key stat

Tottenham have lost just two of their last 11 Champions League away games.
