Match preview

Rangers were torn apart in a 4-0 drubbing at Ajax on their Champions League return last week but electric home support at Ibrox should be the catalyst for a positive response against Napoli.

That hiding in Holland came just four days on from another 4-0 beating at the hands of Old Firm rivals Celtic.

However, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side are a formidable force on their own patch and that was highlighted in last season’s run to the Europa League final.

Ibrox is a special place on an European night and in Uefa’s supporting competition last season they dumped out Borussia Dortmund thanks to a 2-2 second-leg draw in Glasgow, and recorded 3-1 wins over Braga and Leipzig.

More may be required against Napoli and they may currently be operating below last season’s level, but they should at least put up a fight.

Napoli sit top of Serie A after six games and must be full of confidence after last Wednesday’s 4-1 thrashing of Liverpool, where they had raced into a 3-0 lead at half-time.

However, the Reds’ high defensive line was easy for them to exploit and Rangers are going to be more compact.

With this fixture also having been pushed back a day, Uefa have announced that no away fans will be present in Glasgow which ought to be of some hindrance to the in-form visitors.

Goals could still be on the menu, however, as both teams have scored in four of Napoli’s seven outings this term and their only clean sheet in eight games in last season’s Europa League came at home to Legia Warsaw.

The Gers have lost only one of their last 31 competitive home games, which came against Celtic in April, and they have enough attacking quality to make their presence felt in what should be an entertaining encounter.

Key stat

Both teams have scored in 13 of Napoli’s last 19 competitive away games.
