Match preview

Goals and wins have been hard to come by for Manchester City in the Premier League this season, but they have had few problems totting up either on their European adventures and they can maintain their 100 per cent start to Group C with a convincing victory over Olympiakos.

Pep Guardiola’s side already have their work cut out to mount a meaningful Premier League title challenge after dropping points for the fifth time from just eight games in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Tottenham.

The Citizens have scored just ten goals in eight league outings - they have netted two or more just twice - but there has been a different swagger about them in Europe and with a point to prove they should soundly have the beating of their lesser-ranked opponents.

City have fired home three goals in each of their three Champions League triumphs over Porto, Marseille and most recently Olympiakos, where they were 3-0 winners after restricting the Greek visitors to only one effort on goal.

Manchester City had 20 shots in that Etihad stroll - seven of which were on target - and even for their struggles this season, they remain a long way ahead of the level of any of their Group C counterparts.

Porto managed only two shots on goal in their 3-1 defeat in Manchester, while Ligue 1 side Marseille, who were expected to provide a stern test armed with home advantage, were readily brushed aside 3-0 and could force just two saves from Ederson.

With that in mind, backing City to win by at least two goals - as they also managed in four of their six group games last term - makes plenty of appeal at 5-6.

City’s injuries woes haven’t helped their cause domestically but those worries are easing and they should have their strongest attacking line-up available for selection in Greece.

With Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling back in contention to fight for their place alongside either Gabriel Jesus, Ferran Torres and Riyad Mahrez, that may spell disaster for an Olympiakos outfit who were outclassed in a 2-0 defeat at Porto and have key absentees of their own.

Guardiola is always eager to respond positively to a poor display and that should be the case as they chase qualification from Group C at the Karaiskaki Stadium, where Tottenham scored twice and Bayern fired home three at this stage of last season's competition.

Key stat

Manchester City have scored nine goals and conceded just one in their three Champions League games this season.
