Match preview

The pulse rates of Tottenham supporters have just about returned to normal after a dramatic end to last week's Champions League fixture against Sporting and another tense night is in prospect when Spurs travel to Marseille on matchday six.

Harry Kane's late effort against Sporting was chalked off after a VAR intervention, meaning that Tottenham had to settle for a 1-1 draw with the Portuguese raiders.

That result, coupled with Eintracht Frankfurt's 2-1 home win over Marseille, has set up a fascinating denouement to Group D with just two points covering the four teams, all of whom still have a chance of topping the table.

Spurs head into Tuesday's fixtures in the strongest position and they are guaranteed passage to the last 16 if they avoid defeat at the Stade Velodrome.

However, Antonio Conte's men have not made life easy for themselves recently and the Italian coach, serving a touchline ban for his furious reaction to the VAR controversy against Sporting, will be bracing himself for another anxious evening.

Tottenham's draw with Sporting followed disappointing Premier League defeats to Manchester United and Newcastle and they looked set for a third straight top-flight reverse on Saturday after Kieffer Moore's brace had given struggling Bournemouth a 2-0 lead over the Lilywhites.

Spurs battled back to win 3-2 thanks to Rodrigo Bentancur's stoppage-time goal but their defensive frailties must be a concern for their backers, even if centre-back Cristiano Romero is fit enough to return to the starting 11.

Two late goals from Richarlison, now sidelined with a calf injury, gave Tottenham a 2-0 home win over Marseille on matchday one when the visitors had to play virtually the whole second half with ten men.

Spurs also benefited from a red card in their following home game, a 3-2 win against Eintracht Frankfurt, and their final fixture should provide more entertainment, especially as a win would secure Marseille's place in the knockout stages.

The French side scored six goals in home and away wins over Sporting on matchdays three and four and backers of both teams to score and over 2.5 goals collected within the first half-hour of last week's 2-1 defeat in Frankfurt.

That bet appeals again as Marseille, like Tottenham, are stronger going forward than they are defensively. They warmed up for their Champions League group finale with a 2-2 Ligue 1 draw at Strasbourg on Saturday, letting slip a 2-0 lead in the last 15 minutes.

Alexis Sanchez, Dimitri Payet and Matteo Guendouzi, flourishing in a more advanced role than he played in at Arsenal, are a dangerous front three but Spurs remain one of the Premier League's slickest counter-attacking sides and there should be chances at both ends as Group D reaches its dramatic climax.
